One more comment about the Altstadt apartment: check-in is not allowed until 4p.m. And you don't find that out til after you have paid. We had to while away an hour in a coffee shop, surrounded by our suitcases, as we had already arranged to arrive about 3, which has been the latest check-in time everywhere we've stayed before.

Fantastic town to visit, wonderful buildings and architecture, Beautiful and compact sea port with harbour tours and an amazing fish restaurant. Plenty of good restaurants but would highly recommend the restaurant 'Alte Schwede' in the market square. Several very large church buildings with amazing architecture. Enjoyed the harbour and the large cathedral. Loved all the little shops and the seagulls. My daughter and granddaughter took the harbour trip. As I am unsteady on my feet I found the round cobblestones annoying but nearby was always a flat stone way. Also enjoyed the conversation with a gentleman at the tiny museum who was a member of the gang who played in Soko Wismar....a favorite of mine.Patricia - 10Scored 10

Don't miss the Maritime heritage centre at Alter Hafen (Old Harbor) - excellent English/German explanations of Hanseatic League, & ship form "cog". Wismar has the spirit of a patchwork city.
Wismar has the spirit of a patchwork city. You see the rich history of the city reflected in its buildings. You definitely need to go to the Schabbelhaus Museum to know more about it. There are plenty of places to go to eat. In my experience, there are a lot of nice places in the harbor, but I still miss some in downtown. Definitely a place to visit!

Downtown area is compact. One afternoon is enough to walk all streets. Wismar is popular for tourist. Restaurants were typically fully booked for both of our evenings - next time better to book in advance before arrival to Wismar. Based on advice from hotel we visited Hanse Sektkellerei Wismar, excellent place in historical cellar 10 metres below the ground but very short hours of opening. The production method is same as in Champagne - obviously outside Champagne they need to name it differently as "Traditionelle Flaschengärung"

Location is excellent, has its' own parking, and there is also free public parking available. The hotel itself is pretty new, stylishly furnished, lobby and dining area are very modern looking. Room was very clean and nice, medium-sized. Very comfy bed. Bathroom looks as if it were on a ship, nice touch. Very good breakfast with excellent choice of food. All in all, excellent stay, I can really recommend the hotel.

The hotel is located next to the Wassertor, in front of fish stands and the promenade by the water. Both the breakfast and dinner at the hotel's restaurant were good. Some reviewers have complained about the noise and heat; given the time of the year we left the windows closed, but I can see how in summer, with open windows, the street could get really noise, especially in the morning.
